Costume Designer + Head of Wardrobe

“Summer at the State,” a two-production summer season at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown, PA is seeking a Costume Designer for its July 2022 productions of Pippin and Beauty and the Beast.

Designers are hired as Independent Contractors. Salary of $1,850 per production is offered. Payment is through the theatre’s payroll company and all paperwork must be completed upon hiring with the theater’s bookkeeper. Please expect payment via W-2 unless a 1099 is negotiated.

Overall Duties:

Pre-production:

    • Collaborate with the artistic staff to attain the highest artistic achievement possible.
    • Prepare sketches, designs, and a complete costume plot for the production by deadlines agreed upon with the artistic staff.
    • Create and consistently update a detailed budget in coordination with the artistic team.

Production:

    • Lead in the construction of all costumes for both productions. (Limited volunteer staff is available to assist in supervised construction as well as a single wardrobe assistant for tech and performance.)
    • Supervise/complete the sewing and manufacture and/or purchase/and/or rental of the costumes for the productions
    • Attend weekly Production Meetings to provide budgetary and construction updates.
    • Coordinate with stage management to get performer measurements and schedule fittings
    • Work within a set budget and track and monitor all costuming expenses
    • Oversee (either/both) one mid and/or one end of season strike.
    • Coordinate the work of all volunteer labor for your department with stage management and manage your volunteer team of performers and others with an organized and friendly manner.
    • Provide production stage managers with necessary production reports and alert production personnel to potential needs and repairs.
    • Maintain all costumes throughout the production run including doing repairs as needed during the course of the production. Repairs are to be administered before the next scheduled performance.
    • Adhere to any and all policies and procedures established by the Artistic Director and/or Production Manager as well as any other duties as assigned by the Artistic Director and/or Production Manager.
    • The Costume Designer must be able to manage a budget and give a detailed accounting of expenditures as well as manage a volunteer staff.

Scenic Designer

“Summer at the State,” a two-production summer season at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown, PA is seeking a Scenic Designer for its July 2022 productions of Pippin and Beauty and the Beast.

Designers are (generally) hired as Independent Contractors. Salary of $1,850 per production is offered. Payment is through the theatre’s payroll company and all paperwork must be completed upon hiring with the theater’s bookkeeper. Please expect payment via W-2 unless a 1099 is negotiated.

 

Overall Duties:

    • Design of entire set and pieces for both productions.
    • Create designs by working with inventory furniture whenever possible (inventory list will be provided in advance).
    • Creation and presentation of ground plans and rendering by March 1, after collaboration with Artistic Director.
    • Final drafting packet is due by May 1 and must include rough purchase list of materials required.
    • Understanding that alterations may be necessary after budgetary input from Technical Director and due to the live rehearsal process and limited redesign may be required.
    • Assist the Technical Director and Props Department in the acquisition and creation of all set decoration elements
    • Working closely with the Artistic Director, Costume Designer, Lighting Designer, and Technical Director for creation of a consistent overall production.
    • Attend all production meetings and personally participate in load-in of assigned show.
    • The Scenic Designer must be able to manage a budget and give a detailed accounting of expenditures as well as manage a volunteer staff.

Technical Director + Master Carpenter

“Summer at the State,” a two-production summer season at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown, PA is seeking a Technical Director for its July 2022 productions of Pippin and Beauty and the Beast. The Technical Director is primarily responsible for supervision and implementation of all scenic elements, translating design into construction to support the director’s vision, in a professional and artistic manner within the limitations of the theatre’s schedule, budget and talent resources. The Technical Director is paid hourly; $18/hr.

 

Overall Duties:

    • Collaborate with the rest of the artistic staff to attain the highest artistic achievement possible.
    • Attend weekly production meetings to provide budgetary and construction updates.
    • Attend rehearsals, tech and design runs as necessary.
    • Lead in the building of all sets for both productions.
    • Ensure that all sets are painted and furnished as per artistic discussions with the Artistic Director or guest director.
    • Be present at all technical rehearsals as requested by the artistic director.
    • Provide production stage managers with necessary production reports and alert production personnel to potential needs and repairs.
    • Maintain all scenic elements throughout the production run including doing repairs as needed during the course of the production. Repairs are to be administered before the next scheduled performance.
    • Oversee (either/both) one mid and one end of season strike.
    • Coordinate the work of all volunteer labor for your department with stage management and manage your volunteer team of crew and others with an organized and friendly manner.
    • Maintain the shop area and keep it in a neat and orderly fashion. Facilitate the storage of properties, set pieces, furnishings, and equipment.
    • Keep track of all technical budgets all technical expenses for a given production.
    • Adhere to technical budgets for each production.
    • Coordinate the work of all technical volunteers and guest designers.
    • Adhere to any and all policies and procedures established by the Artistic Director and/or Production Manager as well as any other duties as assigned by the Artistic Director and/or Production Manager.
    • The Technical Director must be able to manage a budget and give a detailed accounting of expenditures as well as manage a volunteer staff.
